Objectives |
| |
The main objective of the Subtask B of Task 23 is to develop guidelines for the design process of energy efficient solar optimised buildings.
To achieve this goal, the method is the following:
- Perform literature search in each country and internationally more generally
- Analyse processes which led to successful buildings in terms of solar energy integration and energy efficiency
- The documentation of the process itself is however usually poor
- It also consists in performing a diagnosis of the prevalent procedures and analyse the reasons why the processes are not optimal
- Each country was asked to provide any relevant material related to the subject.

Objectives of the survey |
| |
The objective of the survey is to analyse the content, form and relevance of a non exhaustive number of different sources, which have been provided by the participant countries.
Each country was left free to contribute or not, depending on the information that the representative had got in his country. Some of the countries decided not to contribute on the basis of lack of relevant material, some other contributed
with memos, documentations, etc. This natural non uniformity reflects national differences, cultural, and background differences among the participants (scientists, architects, engineers), which makes the value of international collaboration more obvious. |

Dealing with complexity |
| |
Building design is a complex process. Energy and environmental performances are only some of the aspects that the building designer (or team) must take into account.
The building planners express the various parameters, variables, dimensions in various manners. The figure below shows as an example one of the representation of the multi-dimensionnal space that the building planning team has to deal with (particularly the architect). |
